BBQ Sanctioning Bodies, Explained

A plain-language overview of KCBS, IBCA, MBN, LSBS, FBA, and the other organizations that run competitive barbecue in the United States: what they judge, where they operate, and how to tell them apart.

Competitive barbecue in the United States runs through a handful of sanctioning bodies. Each writes its own rules, picks its own categories and trains its own judges. That is why a team can place well at one contest and finish mid-pack at another two weeks later, cooking the same food.

The national sanctions

Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) is the largest by a wide margin. Founded in Kansas City in 1985, it sanctions 400 to 500 contests a year across nearly every state, with a growing international calendar. A standard KCBS contest judges four meats in a fixed order on Saturday afternoon: chicken, pork ribs, pork shoulder, brisket. Six judges score each box on appearance at single weight, tenderness and taste at double.

KCBS also runs a Backyard Series for amateur events and a Competitor Series that sits between Backyard and full Master. The American Royal World Series of Barbecue, held in Kansas City each fall, draws the largest team count of any barbecue contest anywhere.

Memphis Barbecue Network (MBN) runs a separate circuit centred on Memphis and the mid-South. Its defining category is whole hog, alongside pork shoulder and ribs. No chicken, no brisket as standalone categories.

MBN judging works differently too. Instead of a blind box, judges come to the team’s pit, and presentation is graded along with taste. The Memphis in May World Championship each May is the network’s marquee event.

The Texas sanctions

International Barbecue Cookers Association (IBCA) is the biggest presence in Texas, with smaller footprints in the surrounding states. IBCA judges chicken, pork spare ribs and brisket, requires at least 11 teams to sanction a contest, and scores boxes at a judging table staffed by qualified IBCA judges. State Championship events qualify cooks for the IBCA World Championship in the fall.

Lone Star Barbecue Society (LSBS) is the other major Texas sanction. Same three meats as IBCA, different points calculation, different tier system. Some Texas weekends run an LSBS contest and an IBCA contest side by side at the same fairground, and teams pick based on which standings they are chasing.

Regional sanctions

Florida BBQ Association (FBA) sanctions the home-state circuit alongside KCBS events. Year-round outdoor weather makes it one of the densest regional calendars in the country, and winter is high season for travelling teams.

Championship BBQ Alliance (CBA) runs a smaller circuit, mostly in the upper Midwest.

Rib Cookoff Association (RCOA) specializes in single-meat rib contests, often sanctioning the competition inside a larger rib fest.

Choosing a contest

For a first competition, the easiest entry is usually a KCBS Backyard Series event nearby. Backyard runs the same Saturday turn-in cadence as a Master Series contest with lighter judging and a smaller field. From there the progression runs into Competitor Series and then full Master. In Texas, an IBCA or LSBS state championship is the equivalent step.

Three things worth knowing before you pick:

Sanction matters for points. Every body keeps its own Team of the Year standings. KCBS points earned at a Master Series contest count for nothing toward IBCA’s.

Equipment carries over. Smokers, prep tables, most pit setups work across any of these. Only the meat selection and the turn-in box specs change.

Judging credentials do not carry over. A KCBS-certified judge has to take IBCA’s class before judging an IBCA contest. Head judges and reps are sanction-specific as well.
